Time away

After a couple of long weeks, including weekends and public holidays soaked up by work, it was time to get some well deserved rest. Not that I got a lot of rest with work. It seems like I cannot turn off or be left alone. Anyway, one of the days i went into work to pick my new work laptop up, a nice shiny new HP all singing and dancing machine, that actually shares a similar spec to the HP laptop I am using now. The only difference is that this Laptop uses Vista, whilst the work machine uses XP Pro. Setting the new laptop up was my priority for when I return to work, so I can jump straight in. All my updates are done and software needed installed.

I still have a lot of work to do upon my return, but it can wait now till Monday. A trip had been planned to go to Melbourne to see the Essendon Bombers play Carlton. The flight was at 2.0pm from Sydney to Melbourne and the flight was fairly decent, small plane but nothing to complain about. We landed on time and left the airport to make our way to the Hotel. It was quite a walk from the Sky-Bus terminal, especially as I still have a bad back, which has now progressed to a trapped nerve. Pain is bearable but makes life difficult walking. We arrived (eventually) at the hotel and signed in, settled in. The room was odd. The Bathroom facilities were encased in what can only be described as a Glass Cabinet, yes Shower, sink and the Throne of Doom. The shower was ordinary, it was just a piece of shiny tubing with a nozzle on the end which allowed water to drip out of, not really what I would call a shower.

We had plans to meet up with some of Sam and Karen’s work colleagues at their Melbourne Office and go for Drinks after work, as one of the men who work there was playing in a bar, just across the street. So off we trundled dressed up in Essendon Supporters gear and had a few drinks. The ‘Bar’ was not one of those places Jeans and tee shirts reside and If you could spot a ‘normal’ phone in there you were either dreaming or on drugs. The Blackberry brigade were out in force that night and probably every other night too.

We probably had one too many drinks before the game and stayed longer than planned, so the Hike to the MCG was a quick and painful one. Someone decided to get a taxi, that was a bad plan, as a Tram ride would have been quicker – which it was. The part which caused me some grief was trying to walk across Williams Street quickly, the plan was to get to the other side, however, my left leg decided it didn’t want to play anymore and gave way. Yep, Splat face first on the Tarmac and Tram Lines. I uttered two words, Oh Shit and scrambled up and limped to the other side, only to discover Sam and Karen in tears of laughter at my expense.

We arrived at The G and watched a really good game of Footy (AFL to you non believers).  essendon beat Carlton 136 – 67. It was nice to see Essendon play as a team. Why did I choose Essendon, I didn’t. The whols familly are supporters, so I get to go. My Team is Geelong and not just because they have been unstoppable for the past two seasons, it was a scientific aproach called eenie meenie minie mo. The walk home from the game was interesting, we took an extended walk – note too self – take control of Map in future. It seemed that the way we came in was not to be the way we left. Great, another marathon wlak I could have done without. We bought drinks to take back to the hotel room and upon arrival consumend a good portion of them, the alchohol eased the pain.

Saturday we had planned to go to St Kilda Beach, which is a very nice area in Melbourne to live.

As you can see a well used beach by all local and non local inhabitants. As you walk further up to the top of the picture it brings you to a Pier, which in turn brings you to a marina and a reserve for some cute critters which are native to this neck of the woods so to speak.

New Toys

So while I am wide awake, I believe it is time to divulge my new toys to the world. My first new toy is my newly aquired IBM server. I have inherited this beast from my Wifes workplace, as they were getting a shiny new IBM Blade Server and very nice too. My little beastie is about 6 years old and has been lovingly wiped and freshly installed Windows Server 2008 trial edition and set to Enterprise mode, although I don’t believe for one minute it will beem me off someplace.

My plan is to better understand the POS Servers we have at work, so hopefully I can get to grips with them and also play around with Citrix. I shall be doing some reading and playing in the forthcoming weeks. I need to set the machine up with a domain, DNS and then setup Active Directory. So I can play with profiles and security etc.

My Second new toy is my DS Lite. For those that know me and know me well, I am not one for Games Consoles. I could never realy justify spending so much on a box that just plays games. A PC can do that and more. However, since Xmas, I am now hooked on the DS Lite and Wii. The missus wanted to buy something for herself this xmas. So seeing as she got her bonus, she was contemplating the Wii and Wii Fit. The total cost was around $550.00 or so. I managed to persuade her that it would be a good buy and so she went along to the store, me in tow and bought the complete kit, as there was a special on them.

So we came home and set it up and spent a few hours playing on the Wii. Ok, you can shout at me now and call me an idiot for not liking games or utter words like I told you so. So save your breath. I Know! we are hooked on the Wii. It is so much fun and even better with a gang of people involved. Bowling has never been so much fun, neither has Golf (was playing this till 6am new years morning and slightly under the influence of drink – but not that much). I love it. The Wii fit side is even better. I have a goal to lose some weight and get the BMI down to something a little more bearable.

My DS Lite came with the Brain Training! Hmmmm. I didn’t realise I was so retarded. Maths Training and Crosswords, Suduko and a few other items. I have managed to get my brain to my real age now or just a fraction younger. My reaction times were slow, if not pathetic. I was so shocked, but kind of expected it. Working in Stores did kind of numb my brain. So I am glad I got these Brain training games and brush up on my Maths. To be honest, I hated Maths at school. Iwas never really that good at it and didn’t realy see the point. How wrong could I have been. Nevertheless, I have managed to scrape by in life, but shouldn’t really have to. if you take anything with you from reading this. Maths is very important, whether you love it or hate it.

Me and the Reef 320 by AQUAPRO

As promised. I said I was going to upload a few piccies of the Australia Day Long weekend. So here it is. Me and the Boat out on the water…well, where else would you expect to find a boat?

Me out on the river

Back View of Me

another shot of me out on the river

This was the first time I have ever been out on a boat of this nature in my life. The very first time I have rowed a boat. The skill in rowing is knowing when to dip the oars and when to lean back and when to use your arms and back, indeed most of your body is used in rowing. I was out there for quite a while, I even managed to get sam in the boat too, which was fun. Even funnier was watching Sam try to row the boat. It isn’t as easy as you would assume it to be. Moreso when you have a current to contend with and bigger, faster boats than you.

If your wondering what the white tee-shirt is – for the non Australian peeps, its called a Rash vest or Rashie. It helps keep you from burning in the Sun, seeing as we get a lot of it. I say that now, but these past few days, have been extremely wet. The river at the bottom of our road actually burst its banks. Just as well i bought a boat, methinks I will be needing it to get to work at this rate.

The Boat I am in is called a Reef 320. Reef, is the style or brand of Boat and 320 is its size, namely 320cm, or 3.2M. This is one of many boats I deal with from time to time at work.

Australia Day – Long weekend

Had a great time this weekend. And thankfully, all went according to plan. As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought an inflatable boat from work, for a fraction of the cost it would have been had I walked in off the street. The plan was to hit the river and the Sea, close by to where we were all staying. Sam and myself, plus Karen and Paul for the long weekend down the coast at Myola, not far from Calalla Beach/Bay. The trip went well, traffic was fair and the hire car was superb, albeit a tad boring, it was very nice and the air-con worked. :-)

We arrived at our rented accomodation for the weekend and started to unpack all of our clothes and belongings along with all the crap you bring but don’t really need to bring. The ‘Just in case’ ideas were in overtime methinks. We unpacked the Boat  and snorkelling gear and settled in to sitting down for five minutes, quick slurp of some ice cold beer and I was raring to go. The Day had started off fairly early and the night ahead was take it as it comes. The bed was most uncomfortable, although after a few drinks and the fact I was tired, I slept fairly well.

Thye Cars had to be parked ‘off-site’ due to the sprinklers being plumbed into Bore Water, which can make a mess of paintwork, but its good for gardens though. The sprinklers turned out to be a pain in the arse, as they came on at the most stupid times, morning, when you were up and stretching your legs, lunchtime and tea time. This played havoc with trying to cook the BBQ and keep the dogs from running into the smelly bore water. The stench was bad, fortunately the smell faded once the sprinklers finally stopped.

We all took our dogs with us. Sasha loves the beach and moreso loves the water. I think she must be crossed with a fish, as she swims without any effort at all. She body surfs with the waves and swims out again, she is truly a surf dog. I went out into the sea, which for me is a miracle, due to the fact I cannot swim. So with my Sports Life Jacket on, I went out into the sea and floated and kinda swam. I was loving it, so were the dogs. They were running in and out of the water, chasing each other, barking like raving lunatics. They had a whale of a time. I donned my snorkel gear except the fins and ventured out into the sea, deep enough to stick my face into the water and shallow enough for me to stay upright. I did manage to duck my head into the water, but quickly lifted my head out again. Its a bizzare feeling, if you have never snorkelled or cant swim, your brain says you should be drowning, but your body is somehow sucking air through a bit of pipe and into your mouth and into your lungs.

My second attempt at being in the water, I did manage to take off my Life Jacket and try and swim/float/trad water unaided. I did manage to float a little, I simply allowed my body to go with the waves. I also manage to tread water and move around a little bit, just not confident to commit my whole body to the correct swimming angle and actually swim. Having said all that, What I did do, was more than I had ever done before, so I feel quite proud of myself. I will still look into my swimming lessons and get motivated into doing some reall lengths in a pool, a big pool.

The Boat, was inflated, was placed into water and occupants got in and moved around the river. Yes! Me!, I actually got in and rowed the boat, albeit badly at first, but got there in the end and had a brilliant time out on the water. Sam was the only one to get in, Karen, whom wanted to, refused to get in!? anyway. I even went out on my own, going a fair distance for a first timer. I was however, nearly taken out by a big boat, which I have to say, should have given way, not sure on that, but needless to say, I totally enjoyed it. I will be adding the photos up here soon.
