On the move

I thought it was nearing that time again, but sadly, all too soon for my liking. The current house we rent, is ok, apart from being small, very small, especially the kitchen. The garden is quite a fair size at the rear and the front lawn and nature strip is ok. The owners of this property have decided to sell the house, therefore, we must move out eventually. I would rather move out now, before we get hordes of people wandering through. So time to pack belongings into nice boxes and label them, so we know, or at least have a better idea of what is in them, unlike previous moves.

Luckily I will have use of the works truck or Ute if need be, which will make life a lot easier than last time. This time we have made a better attempt at getting organized.  The only drama we have had to face is the house we want to move into, does not have Cable or Cable TV. Ahh yes, the old dial up was rearing its ugly head. NOT!!! I would rather shave my scrotum with a blunt spoon first. The good news is that we can get the ADSL2+ which in lay mens terms is DS. Not sure if thats a good thing or not, I have always used cable for my tintyweb connection. The Optus Help desk advised that we could just swap over to the ADSL2+ as we have just signed up for a 2 year contract with them.  The professional Package offers upto 20M/bit download and 512kbps upload and a 30 gig bandwidth which is keyed off both up and downloads.

The previous package which no longer exists had a 20 Gig bandwidth peak times and 40 Gig off peak, giving a fair amount of Bandwidth to use. Sadly this is not the case now. So close watch on the usage. Bitlord will have some major changes being made to its upload allowance!

The weather here has been, what can only be described as SHITE! Rain, thunderstorms like you wouldnt believe, more rain, then sunshine, which then brings about the humidity. Considering this is our ‘summertime’ it has been shot to shit with rain, rain and more rain. I shouldn’t complain, because we really do need the water, just not so much and in one go please!

The Festive Season

How long does the build up to Xmas take? And how long does it take for Xmas to pass by? Too long and too bloody quick. However, this season saw something different for me. Not as much Booze and no cigarettes. The drinking was cut down, although I did enjoy a few drinks here and there, not too mention the build up to Xmas. Getting the lawns into shape, was priority, the bad weather we have had has made keeping the gardens at bay extremely hard work. Fortunately, some good days before made it possible to attack the feral lawns and make them safe. Every time someone went into the garden, I could here the cries ‘don’t go into the tall grass’ – Jurassic Park came to mind.

The Works Party was awesome. I had planned on not drinking, so I had decided to drive to the works party, but, I decided that I had earned the right to have a few drinks, so I did and in moderation. The night started off good and got better. The food was an improvement from last years party and a better choice of drinks for the most part. Karaoke was a feature to be endured. I had planned to partake in making a fool out of myself, either sober or under the influence. Normally it wouldn’t even enter my head to consider singing, but I did. I did it My Way. Yes ‘My Way’ that old classic, that anyone can sing, except me.
I started off all serious, then progressed to a crazed Pub singer from the UK. I definitely did it my way, there wasn’t a dry eye or crotch in the house, they were pissing themselves. Needless to say, everyone knows I can’t sing, but I gave it my all. I was also conned into singing ‘Like a Virgin’ and two other songs, which names fail me at the moment. At the end of the night I won a $15 gift card at a music store called Sanity.

So Xmas day came and was spent up at Karen and Paul’s, just up the road with all the family. Turned out to be a good day, not too much silly water was consumed and so everyone was a happy bunnyip so to speak. The only issue with Xmas day – It Was COLD!!! For gods sake, normally it would be hot, but no, nice cold breeze from the south, kept everyone cool/cold.

The presents were handed out and the usual thank you’s and ‘Ive still got the receipt if its too big’ were being uttered. Sam did well this year and still have one present to get still, her Bike. I finally got my Digital SLR. YAY!!!!! The twin lens outfit in black. I also bought a 2 gig CF card for it and seems to work quite well. It really does make a world of difference using an SLR over a standard Digital Camera and the quality is so much better. Even taking some drunken snaps of the friends and family, they turned out really good. I printed a few off on the Canon Printer I bought. superb quality and so nice to have large sized sharp and crystal clear photo’s. And so now we head off into 2008. My new years resolution is to get even fitter. I am going to learn to swim and take up Scuba Diving. That is the plan. I am also going to seek out a Gym and work on the whole body. This time next year my plan is to be able to maintain a weight below 80 Kilo’s and be able to swim a good few lengths of a large swimming pool and have done more than one dive. More on all of this later. It remains for me to say, I hope all who read this had a really good Xmas and have a great new years. I hope health and wealth find you all.

3 Years in Australia

Yes, it has been a 3 whole years living and working in Australia. I have also been with my current employer for almost 12 months. 25th of this month and it will be 1 Year.

Am I enjoying living in Australia? Yes, I am looking forward to gaining Australian Citizenship, I just have to wait a little under 12 months for that.

a good weekend

Well, it finally came and now its almost over. Last week was shocking. Our computer system at work went down. All week we were in and out of our citrix server, one minute we had e-mail, the next we didn’t. Friday came and at the last dying moments I managed to get my e-mail.

The drive home was the same as usual, upon arriving home, i found two packages sitting on the doorstep. Intrigued as to what they were, I opened the one with my name on it. It contained a letter and a small box. The letter was from my web hosting company, thanking me for my custom and please accept this small gift as a way of saying thank you.  I opened the box and inside was a small to medium sized desk calculator. I have to say, as sad it may sound, it was a perfect end to the week, it really cheered me up.

Monday, bloody Monday

If there was one day in the week, that i could give up. Monday would be the day of choice. You work all week, aim for Friday arvo, then home time. The weekend starts then. Ours was good. We went out to the Revesby Workers. now lets just ponder on that name. Revesby Workers. I was expecting some dirty grotty shack, sawdust and spittoons everywhere. But no! Revesby workers is a white palace, big, organised and spacious. The food was good, considering it was a bistro affair, prices where average and the drinks weren’t too bad either, except the choice of beer was limited. I had just the one, as I was the designated driver.

We settled into a night of a few drinks and watched the footy (Rugby League). After a few hours had gone by, we decided to head back home and buy some more booze, so at least I could kick back and unwind. Jim Beam, my saviour. I only had the one glass, as I wasn’t really in the mood to get wrecked, nor did i want to anyway.

Saturday night I cooked up a curry, complete with naans and poppadums. The curry was ok, but for a jalfezi it was a wee bit bland, not as hot as I recall from my days in the UK. i could have added more chilli, but I had to consider everyone else. Beer consumed at a steady rate and Apple Crumble for desert. All in all a pleasant night.

Sunday was a lazy day, however, I did get to goto IKEA. Damn I hate that place. Having worked there, it was nice to wander round and walk out, only buying a few items. Came home and settled into the haunted fish tank, the TV. Watched yet more episodes of Stargate Atlantis, season 3, yes downloaded from the net, but soon to be purchased, that way, you get to see the extra features and interviews.

The beast that was is still serving as a media centre, it just needs a decent tv/capture card in their to really make its life worth while.

Now back to Monday’s. You have the weekend off and start the week off, with a Monday. Its slow, chaotic, people are grumpy and you still have over 4 days to go till the weekend again. Look i know you have to work to make your way in life, unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but hey, can we cancel Mondays? Please?

Ahh, I almost forgot. Whilst in IKEA, Sam, Karen and myself were making our way up the escalator and I saw someone, I hadn’t seen in ages. Andy from Canada. I shouted down to him as I was swiftly launched upto the showroom, he looked, but obviously didn’t see me. Andy if you are reading this…Contact me. Let me know how your doing these days.

Anyway. Monday is all but over – thank god! And Tuesday is approaching. Another early start for me, so we can get cleared away all the cardboard boxes we have accumulated again.

Now that i have offended everyone

A good weekend has been had by all. Mark and Linda + family have been and gone, they left early this morning. Marks father sadly is terminally ill and it is just a matter of time before we get that fateful call. I think both Mark and Linda needed to get away and relax as best as they could, hopefully make this forthcoming week a little more bearable, well that was the plan anyway.

The weather has been shocking, constant rain and some serious flooding in the Newcastle area and Hunter Valley, plus surrounding areas. Quite a few people have died whilst countless others have been injured and lost all their belongings and homes. farmers have lost livestock and even their farms have been submerged.

we needed rain, but jesus H we got more than we bargained for.

Back on the Mac tonight, felt like I needed to get back to normality, damn PC was playing up again, running that pesky Vista. Still haven’t got round to putting XP back on, I just can’t bring myself to phone MS to re-activate again. god that shits me. My New Mac ‘Quicksilver’ should be here within 6 days, i have also bookmarked a 500Gb exteranl Hard drive – SATA no less and will work on both MAC/PC. Albeit the drive will need formating to work with MAC, but hey, that should be easy to do???

I just hope that the Quicksilver can see larger sized Hard drives without having to partition the heck out of it. anyways, i could set the Drive to 50/50 mac – pc format, again fingers crossed.

More on all of this later

Strange Signage!?!?!

I forgot to mention yesterday, that when I arrived home, pulled into my driveway and saw something out of the corner of my eye. Upon investigation (a blokey look), I was under the impression that it was an announcement to the neighbours that a new house was being built next door, not the arsehole side, but the other side. I never even considered the fact that was anything other than Robert wanting to rennovate his home, as we had spoken about this a couple of weeks back.

I looked at the picture and thought cool! I first thought that it was a For Sale sign, but was wrong (I had a second blokey look). Sam came home and looked peaved. She said, ‘thats great, they are building a Duplex on this land!’ (Town house or Semi-detatched as they are called in the UK)

To which I replied, nah, its Robert building a new house.’ Sam said, Nope! Its our Landlords building a new House. When were they going to tell us!?!?!’

So I was wrong on both counts. Yep, twas not happy. So that night was spent looking online for new rental property and planning the dreaded moving house scenario. Oh Joy! With that in mind, we decided to wait and see what our estate agent said in the morning. So today, Sam called them up first thing and was told the news. No they are not building yet, they are just putting in the planning permission and they have to advertise the fact as to what is going there/here.

Phew!!! So we don’t have to move, well not for a while anyway.

drive in

The long weekend is almost over and what a way to end an Easter weekend no better than a drive in movie. For some people reading this, will have experienced the drive in movie scenario. Get into your car, load up with sweeties and drink and copious amounts of junk food, Coca cola and other such liquid heart attacks in a bottle and head off into the dark to your local drive in.

For some, this is a regular occurance, but for me, this was a first. The concept is pretty neat. The comfort (or discomfort depending on who gets the passenger seat) your own sound system and a prayer to the almighty car battery god, that you don’t get to walk home if your car won’t start. I guess your wondering what film I went to see?? 300 of course. The over advertised movie about a bunch of Greek dudes in leather bathing shorts and red curtains draped around their necks setting off to fight an unbelievable amount of other dudes wearing even more outlandish costumes and armour. Result – Yep Matrix and aeon flux style fighting with a dash of Gladiator styled dialogue and pep talks, “for tonight, we dine in HELL!!!!!” That always gets you raring to go I find.

All in all I thought the movie was great, not excellent, but great. There has been an abundance of this kind of movie and the stylised fight scenes make it a bit of a yawn at times. The habitual sex scene and weird effects make this movie a bit hard to swallow…poor taste in words I know, but I suppose is a requirement these days. What I did find suprosing is that some bloke took his young kids into the drive in and as far as I could tell, they were definitely under age for this kind of movie.

If you liked Gladiator and other films like that, then you should enjoy ’300′. I am glad I went to the movies to see this, as the big screen makes it all the more enjoyable, not so sure what a standard home TV screen would have done for it, regardless if it is a 40 inch plasma/LCD et al.

Seeing as it was easter, we did the typical barbie thing and cooked some juicy meat and snags, some light seasoning and onions, salad and a few drinks. Paul and Karen were here as was Adam and Jess, Jean and me and Sam. Both Sam and I decided to bring the barbie onto the Deck – still need to take piccies of this. We also bought a new heater for outside, one of the free standing LPG gas heaters, sourced and purchased at Bunnings, built and placed outside. It certainly did the trick, as it did get a tad cold after dinner (Tea Time).

It was decided that we would go and see the movie, Paul and Karen didn’t get to make an appearance for some reason and one I wont go into here, needless to say, two people werent happy for some reason. Anyway, the night ended with the drive home and sit down and relax, after I had consumed 5 Doughnuts caked in sugar, half a medium sized Hot Popcorn (salted) and maltezers fun sized packets. I can hear my arteries cracking now and my heart rate is about (or aboot for any Canadian readers) 180 bpm at least. Don’t worry, I worked with a Canadian at IKEA, Andy his name and havent heard from him since.. Where are you man?

Easter

It soon comes round, no sooner have you just finished eating the Turkey and stuffing, its time for Choccy eggs and bad TV. Thankfully Foxtel has been running a Star Wars marathon, the whole 6 eps back to back. The force has returned and is strong. Anger the dark side it is and help you I can have been in full flow.

The Sport has been good too, thanks to AFL and Footy (Rugby to you and I). The footy tipping has been going well too. Work has been running a footy tipping scheme, where by you choose the teams playing on the friday and over the weekend, to attain points and money rewards for whomever gets it right. So far, I am only 4 points from the leader.

The weekend thus far has been average, save for a few glorious moments of Sunshine and the occaisional drinky. No I haven’t consumed stupid amounts of Chilli Schnapps, nor have I gone through a carton of beer, even though I have got 2 cases of Tooheys Extra dry and a full case of Jim Beam and cola.

I also have a Bottle of Jim Beam and a Cruise and Meal for two which I won at the raffle at work. The charity was for Diabetes, so everyone at work contributed a decent amount of money for the charity. Work provided the prizes and the employees reaped the rewards. First prize was a Phillips Surround sound system, which someone gloated at everyone…it fell on deaf ears to me, as I have a Pioneer system which would wipe the floor with the small sized package Nial won. Nial? Yes Nial, a person of arrogant stature and little or no patience, but has been known from time to time to show signs of humaity. He works next door to where I work, albeit for the same company, just a slightly different banner.

So far the bottle of Jimmy has been untouched and will remain that way until I absolutely have to open the bottle, I also have a bottle of Jack Daniels opened and only a mere glass full has been consumed, with a fair bit of ice.

Good news on my Mother. I spoke to her on Wednesday night, as she was seeing the doctor/surgeon that morning. I waited up to give her a call, hoping that she would be home, lucky for me she was. The news is good. She will still have to have surgery, but will be treated with Hormone therapy after the procedure. The type of cancer is one of few that can be treated with Hormones and responds well. Thank god she won’t have to go through chemotherapy. The www.breastcancer.org site has all this infomration. This will be a good thing for my mother, as her chance of recovery is high and the surgeon is hopeful and positive he can remove all the cancer, due to the fact it is in its very early stage.

Further news on this will be given here both closer to the date and indeed after she has had the operation.

Ok, my neighbour issue. Thus far all contact has been severed, not that I miss his babblings and bullshit, big noting himself (making himself sound better than he is), no eye contact has been encountered nor has anything been thrown over the fence. The fence remains unlike the other side of his garden, the new colorbond fence has been erected and looks good. The Owners of this house, allowed us to go to Bunnings Warehouse to purchase the fence extender, yes fence extender. In its simplest term, a section of lattice made to slide over the top of the existing fence and thus make the fence taller and from an asthetic point of view, look nice too. All that remains is to screw this to the orriginal so that it cannot be taken off by the moron next door. I just need to goto the Estate agent in the week to collect my money for buying the goods.

Easter time is also the time for decorating. Yes the paint pads and brushes have been into play here. The new paint was mixed and brought home and we set to painting one wall, as a feature wall, bad news is we need more and the rest of the house needs doing. The paintwork is OK, except the colour of it is shocking. If you like a pale yellow colour, then it would stay, but we don’t and feel that the place needs a touch of fresh paint.

It is also that time of year for our beloved easter show, whereupon millions of people congregate in one area for the showbags and shows and displays. The amount of people that goto this show is unbeleivable, but it is one of those things you have to do once….So this year, I aint, gonna, coz I did it last year. Ok, time for a smoke and I suppose I better think about going to bed, been a strange day.

The Deck is complete

At last, I can come home from work and not have to start working on the deck. The hard labour is done. All I need to do now is oil/stain the decking and paint the uprights and bannisters. That is if the weather is kind enough to allow. We have had some really bad rain of late and storms to die for. Yep free light shows nearly every night. Most of last week and this week too. Thankfully the weekend brought some decent weather for my party.

Yep Forty years old and still as stupid when it comes to drinking. Yes I should know better, but seeing as I have been slaving away fro over 2 weeks now on building this deck, plus all the overtime at work, it was my plan to write myself off on Saturday night. The theme was ‘Mexican’ so poncho’s and sombreros were all the go. As for drinking, we had Coronas (with lemon as they taste shocking without), Tequilla and the favourite but not quite mexican was the Chilli Schnapps purchased at the Golden Grape in the Hunter Valley. This has been with us for some time now and has produced some painful expressions on many faces. However, my expression was vague, moreso towards the end of the evening, when I quite happilly slipped into a drunken stupour then a coma as my head hit the pillow.

The day started out with the intention of having to do as little as possible, we had pretty much set everything up as we wanted for all of our guests and familly. All that had to be done was lay a few more chairs and put the decorations up. Done! So all that remained was to have a few drinks before the party started. This is a silly thing to do, I know. Now I know, never to do that again. (until the next time of course). So 1pm AEST time and the first drink was going down my neck. Mark was joining me in the Coronas, seeing as he bought them for my birthday pressy, was only fair that he shared the experience.

So on we went, one bottle, two, three and probably 6 or 7 later before the guests arrived, I can truly say I was getting drunk. The coordination was going and my drinking increased. Chris and Shawn came from work, with their wives Rachael and Carmel, Adam and his new Girlfriend came, Paul and Karen came. Lisa, Sams friend came up from the coast. All in all it was a fun day, plenty of nibbles and food.

The Sad part was it had to end as all parties do, but I don’t regret one minugte of it, as throughout the entire night, I had a smile on my face which finally ended up as a big daft grin and then giggles as i slipped into my drunken stupour, thanks to drinking the rest of the Chilli Schnapps, My boss looked on, as did Sam and thought, this is going to be the last drink of the night. And they were correct.

Sunday was a total loss to me, I do believe that around 5 pm I was actually able to stand up without feeling like I was walking on 3 feet thick sponge. The room had stopped spinning and the furry mouth syndrome had left me. I felt like shit, but could at least manage some food and water.

Will I do it again, NO! I will have a drink like I normally do, but not write myself off. The only good thing is I didnt make an arse out of myself.
